This one-hour wānanga will introduce GIS mapping technology for those working in Māori groups, projects and trusts (and is a follow-up to our 15 March “How can GIS help my hapū?” session). It provides a foundational understanding of how these tools can be employed to uphold the principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship), reinforcing the connections of whakapapa, and relationship with the whenua.
Geographic information systems (GIS) mapping provides a bridge between the rich heritage of the past and the possibilities of the future. It enables hapū to visually narrate their stories, manage land and resources, and safeguard their cultural landmarks.
Join us for this “back to basics” step-by-step approach to how you can use and apply GIS mapping to the many projects of your hapū, trust or environmental projects in our capability building series, Ngā Poutama Matawhenua.
Our objective is to provide the skills and knowledge necessary for effectively using GIS technology to support Māori interests in storytelling, land management, and environmental monitoring and many other kaupapa.
April 12 2024: Sharing stories through data
Ngā Poutama Matawhenua is a regular programme of online mapping wānanga to help you learn how to map your whenua and tell your stories through GIS mapping. These interactive wānanga are specifically tailored towards those working for iwi, Māori trusts and environmental groups.
